Perfection is a concept that doesn't really exist. The idea of perfection merely stifles creativity, making your journey in quilting all the more difficult. Once I discovered that I was learning the rules in quilt making so that I could be free to break them, my process went much more smoothly. Of course, I do try to be accurate and precise as I assemble my pieces of fabric. However, when I let go of the perfect outcome, I can become a more fluid version of myself. This allows a more flexible route to bring my vision to fruition. I now ask myself, "has my piece come out as I intended?"
I have witnessed my students struggle with perfection. This leads to the idea that their work isn't "good enough". Making fabric choices becomes a nightmare when the voice inside your head insists that there is one correct choice and you better find it. The reality is that there are a multitude of choices that will be just right to create your work of art! If you choose the fabrics that simply please you, your finished creation will be an extension of yourself. If your piece tells your story, that sincerity will come through. Sometimes, your choices feel like a leap of faith because you are unsure. Many times I will look back at my design wall and find that I'm not happy with a piece of fabric that I have chosen. A little reverse sewing and fitting a new piece in is a simple fix. Trust yourself, have fun and let your work surprise you as it unfolds. It's a lot more fun when you don't allow the idea of "perfection" to enter your studio.
Paul Klee said, "Art is what happens between the thoughts." It's in that quiet space that everything seems to flow in our favor. They say that you cannot think while you are humming. I have a friend who always hums as she draws, allowing her masterpieces to come through.
I like to listen to music that makes me happy and transports me to a state that feels like freedom. Find what works for you and enjoy the journey!
